With the McLaughlin Planetarium closed for more than a decade and the David Dunlap Observatory only closed a few months, it would seem that Southern Ontario is suffering in the area of Astronomy and Space Exploration outreach and education.That may soon be about to change. Please checkout the Earthshine foundation and their mission to to help build and operate a proposed state-of-the-art Planetarium and Space Discovery Centre in Southern Ontario.

Any idea where such a facility would be built? Maybe on the DDO property?

ReplyDeleteI wouldn't think it would be built on the DDO land as that's now in the hands of developers.
Presumably, a "state of the art" facility would also require reasonably dark skies. I hope this comes to fruition.
ReplyDeleteGordo, they're not proposing an observatory and there is a balance between public access and ideal observing conditions.
ReplyDeleteThe RASC uses the Ontario Science Centre grounds for observing and that works. A location on Manitoulin would be amazing but wouldn't bring in too many tourists.
